Throwback Thursday, Thank You Emails and Tenure

There is a section of my blog I have not touched in over 2.5 years. It sits there representing a time when ideas were welcomed as long as they didn’t question money or discipline.

The “Thank You” emails I received before I raised concerns and became a “bad teacher.” have been listed under “The Good” in my top toolbar. They recently came up on my radar as I was researching something for court. I read some of the 70 or so emails and slipped into joyous memories of a different time. A time when tenure, union and job protections did not matter. A time before I had the audacityto raise concerns that affected thepublic and school community. A time before I realized that students were not first, but rather last.

For Throwback Thursday I share (re-share) Thank You emails from Principal Linda Hill. They are also a great example of how important it is to document everything. Enjoy….

[oh, by the way, you’re welcome!]

Dear Staff,

CHEERS AND JEERS

Kudos to Ms. Obler, Mr. Portelos, and our Robotics team for placing second in performance and third overall in the Robotics competition yesterday. Eighty schools were involved in the Robotics competition and IS 49, as always, proved to be a fierce competitor. Thank you Ms. Obler and Mr. Portelos.

Dear Staff

I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather we are having this weekend. This Indian summer wont last too much longer. However, it is good while it lasts.

This is my first attempt to write you via the schools dreyfus49.com email. I spent my weekend recuperating and listening to Francesco Portelos tutorials. They are quite good. Here are well-deserved kudos to you, Mr. Portelos, for taking the time to create such effective tutorials for the staff and students. If you are new to Google, as I am, I suggest that you review the tutorials as I found them extremely helpful. Also you will be able to learn how effective, mini tutorials can be for your students. I know the tech team will be teaching us how to do that in the near future.

Dear Staff,

Students need to be in your classroom at all times, unless they are picked up by a service provider or you are contacted by the Main Office, a dean, AP, or me. If you are having difficulty with a challenging student please use our new on line referral process created by Mr. Portelos and Mr. Valia. You can find the referral form www.Dreyfus49.com site. Once you have signed in click on Staff/Student pages. Then click Staff Only Site. Look on the left of the page and find Student Write ups tab and click. Fill in the appropriate information including the actions taken previously section, in other words, it is important to know what the teacher did to remedy the situation before a referral to the dean or guidance. This information can then be used when we call the parents, or when we discuss students at the monthly PPT meetings.

Another great tab on the www.Dreyfus49.com Staff Only Site page is the In House Students tab. Once you click on that tab you will see the names of the students who are serving a Teachers removal, Detention, Principals Suspension, or a Superintendents Suspension. If you are the teacher of any student serving a Principals Suspension, you are required to submit the in the designated spaces, the work for the student for each day that student is serving the suspense. This process helps to hold students accountable for work assigned during their suspense. It is a record of grades to include when you determine that students grade for the marking period. You can still submit assignments without using the site, but why would you when it can be done so easily and efficiently on line.

See you tomorrow,

Linda

Another feather in your cap Francesco, this will be great, and if a parent forgets the password they can find it easily. And yes, I definitely would like to see the possibilities of an on line Progress Report grades (data) input for teachers and retrieval for parents. We are definitely on to something here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Matthew, Francesco,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hate to bother you during your vacation but do you know how to set up an Excel spreadsheet that can 2 step calculations to determine a HR grade for a student:

There will be three criterion for a HR grade

(A) Attendance for a termX/38 days will equal a percent This should be 50% of the final grade

(B) Students having their IDs for the term ie X/38 days in complianceThis should be 25% of the final grade

(C) Students having their independent reading book for the term ie X/38 days This should be 25% of the final grade. I’m not sure if I am making myself clear. I want teachers to be able to plug in numbers to get a grade for HR and I think it can be done with Excel. As I think it out it step one should be a straight percent calculation x/38 were “x” is the number of days (present and on time, in compliance with IDs and books) and the 38 is the # of days in the term. To weight the grades we need to determine what is 50% of B + C is and then add that total to A and divide by 2. Have I confused you enough

Sorry to bother you during the weekend but will you be able to set up a quick survey that I can send to the staff to ask to 2 questions: (1) Would you be willing to donate (without pay) 2 periods to cover a class rather than having a class broken up and the students distributed throughout the academy

(2) Are you interested in meeting with the principal and other staff members(during any of the 3 lunch periods)

to discuss and share your constructive ideas in a Principal’s Chat

Staff should be able to answer yes or no on the survey, and if possible, be identifiable. Can you make a link to Survey Monkey or can you make your own survey data collection link Please let me know so I can include it in Sunday’s Staff Message. Thanks, Francesco.

Did you have a great vacation I do hope you had time to enjoy the things you usually dont have a chance to do, even if it was just to sit and read and relax. I can bet that some of you went to the opening Yankees or Mets game. Im just glad they happened during the break. ;)), and at least the Mets fans are happy.

Looking back a bit, I believe that we had a really good last day before the break with our all day staff development. I base my findings on the feedback evaluation sheets you filled out for each of the three workshops. You really, really appreciated the differentiated technology workshops, and I noticed that many of you applied what you learned immediately in the form of new websites. A great big Thank you to Mr. Valia, Mr. Portelos, Ms. Blanchard, and Mr. Rossicone for providing such a rich experience for us all. Dear Teachers,

As you may know IS 49 was awarded a coveted learning technology grant to work with a non public school (in our case St. Claire’s School) on a project, infused with technology and with a project based outcome. Further, for this grant, we had to target a specific group of children that were not progressing in school academics adequately. We selected Special Education minority boys as that group based on the data from many of our school reports. Mr. Valia and Mr. Portelos, who wrote most of the grant for us will be the critical links to the technology part of the project, but we need all curricular areas to be involved in the project.

This week is our first full week back after a long break and since there is only1 day that we have off until June (Memorial Day), we are in for the long and final haul.

Last week we ended with the Academy Idol on Friday OMG -what a great show! A special thank you to Ms. Hargraves who worked very diligently producing such a wonderful show. But no man is an island, Ms. Hargraves had help from Ms. Sullivan, Ms. Fareri, Ms. Jablonski, and Mr. Rossicone. Of course part of the fun is seeing Ms. Martino, Ms. Ruzi, and Mr. Portelos act out the parts of the judges, they all could have a second career in theater J.

CHEERS

🙂 A big thank you to Matthew Valia and Francesco Portelos for scanning hundreds of IEPs on to Dreyfus Google docs so that all staff can have easy access to the IEPs of the students they teach. Having the IEPs on our website saves a tremendous amount of paper, ink, and school personnel time and effort. It also helps to have the most accurate and recent IEP changes promptly delivered to the identified staff. The teckies have also put the students biographical information on our Google docs. Now you can get the phone number or address of any student by searching our site. More importantly you can edit the information – if a student tells you he/she has a new phone number, address, or an alternate emergency contact. This information is vital so I ask that you put new changes on the Student Contact Google document as soon as you know there has been a change. This way we will have the most up to date contact information in case of an emergency.

Hi Linda,
I woke up to do some work and read another article about that poor Rutger’s student who killed himself after his roommate set up a webcam in his room and made a public viewing of his gay encounters. They are upping cyber harassment laws across the country. It made me think about our dreyfus49 system. We do have a content filer in place which works pretty well. Problem is that these emails that are blocked sit in an ever growing Message Center (found under
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/dreyfus49.com/Dashboard). I honestly do not have the time to check these and send them to Joanne. I’d hate for an email to get filtered but not seen and something bad to happen. If we could set some time aside to create a protocol about Viewing emails and then also the action taken.
When we first started the system, we would suspend the user accounts. I no longer think this is the best way, being that more teachers are sending homework and review sheets via email. I propose that all cyber violators get at least one day of after school detention where they write an essay about being a digital citizen. Just an idea.
The violations also range from basic curse words in normal conversation to very foul and angry fight me after school types.

Linda Hill lhill@dreyfus49.com

10/3/10

to me

Francesco,

I agree, we must do something about the inappropriate use of the internet. It needs to start with lessons from the tech team about Digital Citizenship. I gave Matthew a book that I bought with several lessons that can be taught. we have a person available one period everyday that can look over the emails but she has to be taught how to do so. I don’t agree about detention, I like the protocol of a warning, parent called and suspended account – if they don’t get the HW because they have a suspended account, they’ll have to get it another way. Perhaps you can train Ms. Watt, a new para, how to suspend account too.

Dear Tech Team,

Thank you for the wonderful, informative, and school enhancing PD workshop you facilitated with our staff on creating web pages. Your workshop was well received as determined by the positive feedback I heard from the staff. I saw new additions to our school web site from various teachers. Excellent!

I just want to remind you that the self-assessment I distributed on Friday is due. I understand that it was difficult to complete the self-assessment on Friday because you were involved in setting up and facilitating the workshops. However, please submit the self-assessment to me by the close of Tuesday. Thank you.

HAPPY FIRST YEAR BIRTHDAY “WWW.DREYFUS49.COM” MAY YOU HAVE MANY MORE!

We have had our website up for one year this Wednesday and I believe that it has been a great success. Many thanks go to Francesco Portelos for all of his work getting us started. But our website would not be the success it is without your embracing our effort to make our building a real school of technology. Better yet last year at this time we used 152 cases of 8 1/2 by 11 white paper that being 10 reams per case and 500 sheets of paper per ream. So far this year we used only 32 cases of 8 1/2 by 11 white paper. Great job staff!

Dear Staff,

Another winner of a weekend in so far as the weather was dry and temperate. On Saturday we had our Scholars and TAP Open House. This was a first attempt at having the Open House so early in the year, and it was successful. The parents and children that came to the Open House were impressed with the rigorous and technology driven curriculum and the energetic and knowlegable staff. Thank you Ms. Martino, Ms. Diacomanolis, Ms. Ruzi, Ms. Blanchard, Ms. Reier, Ms. Hargraves, Mr. Portelos, Mr. Valia, Ms. Fareri, and Ms, Trombetta for supporting the Open House. Dear Staff,

It seems that many of you are making appointments to meet with parents. Thank you, parent outreach is a vital step to reducing behavior and academic concerns. However, as we invite more and more parents to the school we create another problem….meeting schedules. Many times parents come to the Main Office and tell the secretaries that they have a meeting with a staff member. The secretaries must conduct a bit of an investigation just to find out who the staff member may be (parents sometime forget teacher’s names), where the teacher is, and where the meeting place may be. As a result I asked Mr. Portelos to create a Meeting Schedule Calendar on our website. This way staff can write down any scheduled meeting with parents and Bianca will print it out every morning to share with all the secretaries and the school safety. You were sent an email already from Francesco. Just click the link and then click “Add this calendar”. Now when you schedule a meeting with a parent just record your name, the name of the parent, and where you will meet (preferably in room 131) next to the time slot on the calendar. If you want the parent(s) to meet you in your room, you must first meet them in the Main Office or room 131 and then escort them to your room and escort them back out of the building. (Do not use students to escort parents in the building, however, the PC (parent coordinator) may escort the parents to your room.)

Sincerely,

Linda

Hi Ms. Hill,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend. I had some ideas to increase the access to information and I wanted to run them by you.

1. I know Vicky now types up the In House list and places it behind the sign in sheets. I created a new IN HOUSE list on Google Docs. If it is simply type there instead of Word, then it can be accessible by all of us anywhere. I also put a shortcut on the desktop of the In House PC. That way new admits can be added by the teachers there. Do you think this will work better

2. Unfortunately almost no one took the initative to try the OSS (Online Section Sheet), but what about a simple doc file placed in the online folder for each class. Just for some notes teachers can have that accompany the class like “Joshua was found shooting rubberbands at Louis. Don’t sit them together.”

3. Similar to number 2 but a shared Late list with all students shared by all teachers on Docs. Anytime a student is late, a teacher makes a note and at their leisure documents it on this list. Sorted by Lateness, we can see who is late the most and work on them first.

Always thinking about our school Francesco, that is what I admire about you. However, at this time we are pushing teachers to compete the SWIS, and also raising the bar for technology infusion in classroom via on line instruction, connected learning initiatives, and assessment management systems. I think we should keep things status quo for now and try your suggestions a bit later.

Just an FYI….

I checked with SI Tech and finally heard back that they no longer have an engineering program since Mr. Spiegel retired. According to I.K, N. and K.N, neither Curtis, New Dorp or SI Tech have anything like we offer here at Dreyfus as far as the technology (STEM, Web Design, Video Editing and Graphics) classes go. We should mention that when we start promoting Magnet this year.

Greetings,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Just letting you know that after listening to a seminar by Will Richardson about how we block sites, like facebook, at school and parents don’t monitor it at home giving students free reign to do wahtever, I created my own student only facebook account. What I mean is that it’s separate from my personal account and only have students on it. Our students from Magnet to SpEd are constantly on it after school and I use it to post my educational videos and and promote educational sites. I have however come across even our top students behaving inappropriately and have sent them warnings. I guess I am acting as an web chaperon. I just wanted to disclose this to you and hear any thoughts.

My name on there is MrPortelos Portelos. I have posted several contests on their and keep very good communication with our alumni as well. did you know there are over 489 members in the Dreyfus 49 group someone created including graduates from the 70’s

Linda

Yes. I’m on it. By now we should be able to get a bigger drive for less money.

Linda,
Attached is the excel file of all the new 6th grade user accts. We stayed with the same format of First Initial of First Name, First Four Characters of Last Name and 2 digit graduation year (Derrick Thomas is
dthom13@dreyfus49.com). There about 6 students who we had to add a “2” in front of the 13 because their user names were already used by other students.

Do we have a file with their addresses

I am about to make the group, but it will be 6th@dreyfus49.com. Just as a reminder to place that in the BCC section so the students don’t start replying to all. I just added a thing or 2 in the red section of the letter about collaborating and teaching them digital citizenship.

Francesco,

How are you

Thanks for the research on the thumb drives. I actually bought thumb drives that are embedded in lanyards so that the student can wear their ID cards and have the thumb drives in one place. They are only i gig but I think they are worth the while.

Would you please add the following staff on to our staff email Matthew Martino and Loumaris Orefice. Also would you remove Harvey Handel, Minerva Lucarelli, David Morris, Peri Tanen, and Donna Fox. Better yet, send me instructions for adding and removing folks on the list please. Thanks

Will you be available on August 30th Can you think of some ideas for the orientation that evening I would like to show the video of the kids “Future careers” for one.

Matthew, Francesco,

Ms. Jablonski will be teaching a new course next year – Technology and Health. She has computer skills that may help her deliver more engaging and purposeful lessons. She will be moving to room 102 (Profilio’s old room). How many desktops can we give her It would be great if she had at least 15. Please advise so I can let her know how to plan. Also if she wanted to start setting up, is there a time that you could assist her Can you think of interesting ways to mix Health Education and Tech Let me know please.

Thanks, as usual

Linda

We should have 15 computers. We have to see about wiring in that room. I will be getting a delivery of the replacement printer soon so I will look into it when I am there. I will be doing beacon Mondays and Wednesdays from 11-1pm the first 2 weeks of August. Maybe she can be at school and I can help.

Yes, I created everyone@dreyfus49.com. That is everyone from all staff and all students. Later in August we can break it down again when we know the classes.

Thanks Francesco. I’m having trouble inserting pictures for my 6th grade clues, but I’m just sending attachments until I learn better.

Yes, you can come in. I gave permission for only three people to have access to our building – you are one of them. When do you want to come in I’ll find out if the room is ready.

Dear Francesco,

I LOVE the fact that you are always thinking of ways to improve our technology! Thank you. I think that the Fridgework project is a worthwhile one, I would like to talk more about it. While you have your thinking cap on, how do you think we can increase the student at home participation in on line activities. I see by my summer assignment that a limited amount of kids responded. However, those that did respond absolutely loved it.
