After the bell rang, during our Post Observation meeting, Ms. Edele Williams told me that thelesson she observed was unsatisfactory. I told her that I am leaving the meeting to go teach and found that this was not a collaborative session, since she offered no real way to improve the alleged deficiencies. “Is this the fairway you do things You’re probably not going to write about the switch and program change” I saidas I left. Of course her Post Observation report was absent of any talk of being given the class assignment the period before.

By the way, this was the report card grade of the school Ms. Edele Williams was assistant principal of :

About 15 minutes into thenext period someone comes down to relieve me from the small special education class I was teaching. No, I am not licensed in Special Education in case you were wondering. Apparently Ms. Williams realized that I was correct with how the meeting wentand wanted to meet with me some more. Half the meeting before was about theswitch and set up and not about theactual observation. We continued for an additional period bickering about how this was set up and how those were no longer my students. Had I never been removed, I would not have had disruption to the flow of theunit. In any case, thelesson still went very well.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll go into any class, anywhere in the city, and work well. Observe me anytime, but don’t make it as if I had a week to plan and the resources of a regularly appointed teacher.

Ms. Edele Williams went on to say that another reason the lesson was a failure, was that the objective wasn’t met and it was due to my poor planning. The objective was again that “Students will begin to learn the importance of measuring in Science…”

They did begin to learn the importance of measuring and did so through different discussions that Ms. Williams conveniently left out of her report.

Since one of thereasons I was rated unsatisfactory, was the lack of Common Core, I naturally asked “So which standard should I have used Remember I never had training in Common Core.

She proceeded to take out her iPhone and tell me to download theCommon Core App. I did and I installed it on my Android.

Again, I ask her what Common Core standard should have been used. “That’s for you to find out and search.” she replied. What She gets paid over $100,000 to supervise and support and will not help me find thestandard

I did not know what example she was referring to. Nonetheless we met again on September 29, 2014, This time my schedule had me listed to meet with her for two periods.

I sat down with Ms. Edele Williams, she has her laptop open and says something like “Mr. Portelos, I did not realize that when I rated you unsatisfactory that it was actually your second unsatisfactory lesson of theschool year.”

Me: “What What other lesson was unsatisfactory

Williams: “The one by the principal. You didn’t get it

Me: “No. You mean the one from two weeks ago during Italian class

Williams: “Yes and since you now have two you are in danger of being rated unsatisfactory for the2014-2015 school year.

Here is when I laughed, looked at my watch and said “For the year It’s only September.You know Ms. Williams, I see what is going on here. I spent the last two years uncovering corruption in theDOE and theonly way was to be engulfed in it. I became a School Leadership member and uncovered it is a farce. I was reassigned and exposed that Rubber Rooms still exist. I uncovered thefaulty investigation and 3020-a termination process and over a dozen other matters. Now you and others are going to help me uncover this ATR issue and the faulty kangeroo court that is theU rating appeal. I hope I get to go in front of Michael Agona.

She hadthis strange sneer and responded something such as “I don’t about all that. We are here to talk about your teaching and our concerns.”

Think about it readers. They lodged over 34 investigationsagainst me, in addition to over two dozen other charges, they had me falsely arrested and I am still doing what I love to do…teaching! In fact, the first words I ever typed on this very website, over two and a half years ago, were “My name is Francesco Portelos and I love my job!

Now that the misconduct allegations failed, they will try with incompetence That will actually be harder to prove than the misconduct. Good luck.

Ms. Williams went on to tell me I was going to be placed on a Plan of Assistance (.I would have to give her lesson plans every week and observe other teachers teaching in addition to several other homework items. I couldn’t wait to get the support I so desperately needed that I asked Ms. Edele Williams again “What standard should I have used” This time I opened up the Common Core website (

Mr. Portelos that is not for me to tell you. That is for you to find out. That is yourhomework!

Wait, you told me my lesson was not satisfactory because of it not being aligned to a Common Core Standard and you will not point out or help me find which one to use

Finally, fed up with me, she gives this beauty of an answer. “Well maybe you need to find a standard first, then create a lesson around it. It’s called Backward Design.” This is what is wrong with Common Core. Takes theteaching out of teaching unless you can make it fit thepuzzle.

As per our conversation on Monday September 29th I have draft a Plan of Assistance together with Mr. Portelos to help support and develop his pedagogical skills. As per the plan, Mr. Portelos is required to conduct at least one classroom inter-visiations prior to our next meeting on October 10, 2014. Please afford Mr. Portelos the opportunity to visit with teachers at the school where he can observe best practices in the areas outlined in the plan. Also, if at all possible please arrange for Mr. Portelos to meet one-on-one with your instructional coach or master/model teacher to support him in developing a thorough lesson plan with grade appropriate student task that is aligned to CCLS.

In addition to this support, could someone please help me find what CCLS to use for my unsatisfactory lesson on “Introduction to measurement” I tried looking it up and also asked Ms. Williams several times to help, but unfortunately she has left it up to me. Ms. Williams, I still cannot find what standard you would have liked to have seen in that lesson. I did my “homework” like you told me, but still came up empty. Perhaps you can assist me or also model a lesson for me Ms. Williams. Like I said, I have been out of the classroom for two years and worst yet was prevented from attending Danielson and Common Core PDs.

I also believe I needed a curriculum for Science as per the mandates and agreements that have come down from NYSED and UFT/DOE contract. Since I sometimes also teach other subjects, I will need access to those curriculums as well.

To even better serve the students, I believe I need a copy of every IEP as I never know what student I will be in front of. How else can I address their specific needs

Can someone please clarify your understanding of “a lesson observation performed in a class outside of your license may not be used for your year end rating.”

Oh good. I wonder if all teachers in NYC know that all curriculum is posted on the NYC DOE website.

I look forward to my upcoming sessions with Ms. Edele Williams, so I can finally improve as an educator.

  2. I have a feeling the UFT personnel get bonuses behind the scenes if no hearings or grievances are held. Just a thought on my part because it seems they love discouraging filing grievances and holding hearings. As if at the end of the year the uft rep with the fewest hearings gets a bonus

  3. This would be funny if it weren’t true. I feel for you personally. I used to be an ATR till about almost two weeks ago, luckily I was hired at a school that doesn’t seem too crazy. Will continue to look forward to your adventures.

  4. The system is being run by lawyers. The faster the mayor gets rid of the lawyer and the CFN’s and reverts things back to the community school districts, the better for all of us.

  5. I was fired under timothy behr in my very first year of teaching due to 2 unsatisfactory pop up observation.i was not certified in pre k, only 1-6th. The planned observations I recieved satisfactory. On the report the reason for my termination was lesson planning. The principal even said that i can teach elsewhere just not in her school. There was no uft rep in the school and none ever came out. I dont know what to do or where to go. I filed a grievance and had a hearing where behr stood behind the principals decision. Any advice
